Brotherly Love

I haven't posted about Darren O'Day for awhile. Remember him...an Angels relief pitcher. I just received an email from my mom who received the email from Darren's dad. Occasionally Darren writes articles on his experience as a rookie baseball player. In the article he attributes some of his success to his older brother, Kyle.

Darren O'Day Player Journal (2008)
Darren O'Day is in the midst of his rookie season pitching in the Major Leagues with the Angels. The 25-year-old submarine-throwing reliever has enjoyed a meteoric rise to the big leagues, making his MLB debut in only his third professional season.O'Day went undrafted despite a solid college career as a reliever at the University of Florida, but the Angels wisely signed him as a free agent. And 21 months later he was in the Angels bullpen.Today O'Day begins an occasional column sharing his thoughts along the way of his first season with the Angels.

Hey, Angels fans. Chuck has asked me to share some the excitement I've been through the last six months with you. Hopefully, if he is persistent enough to remind me over and over to write these, we can make this a regular thing. I am writing from above the Grand Canyon, flying comfortably on the team plane, headed for a ten day East Coast swing against Baltimore, Boston and New York. The wild ride that has led me to this cushy seat, my own row, and excellent food started in February, on a plane with markedly less comfortable accommodations (middle seat and peanuts), heading the other way from Jacksonville, Fla., to Phoenix for my first big league spring training. As a minor leaguer, an invite to big league camp is about the most exciting news you can receive in the off season. Spots are very limited in camp, and to be one of the few selected means the front office and coaching staff thinks very highly of you and your skills. It is not only a reward for what you did the year before, but an opportunity. It is a chance to test your mettle with the best players in the world, and show these coaches and players what you can do. I found out in mid-December that I would be attending and immediately started training harder than I had ever before. Our organization is so flush with talent that I knew my only chance to hang with these guys was to take it to another level. So, I packed up my belongings, said goodbye to the hometown crowd and moved an hour and half south to live with my brother, Kyle, in Gainesville, Fla., where I played four years of college baseball for the University of Florida.Kyle is three years older than me, and as most little brothers do, I idolized him when I was little. He started playing teeball when he was 5, and of course I couldn't wait for my chance to get started. If my counting skills at the time weren't limited to how many fingers and toes I had, I probably would have started a countdown of days until my first game. I give Kyle (and my dad Ralph) the credit for getting me into baseball. As my flight accommodations came full circle above, so did Kyle's involvement in my baseball career.Kyle trains Olympic caliber sprinters in Gainesville, and along with help from strength guru Rana Reider, he adapted their workout for my baseball needs. It was the most challenging regimen I have ever done, but far and away the most rewarding. Everyday I would leave the track, weight room and baseball field feeling defeated and weak, but knowing in the back of my mind that this is what I had to do to shine in spring training. I firmly believe that my hard work and Kyle's program is what put me into position to take advantage of the opportunities that presented themselves in spring training, and ultimately got me to the big leagues. He is also a massage therapist, who specializes in soft tissue work, so not only did he spend many mornings putting me through his program, but many afternoons putting my body back together after he destroyed it! So he did all this and has still yet to receive compensation for any of it. What do you think says "thanks for getting me to the big leagues"???When I started there, it was just me training alongside the sprinters, but as the winter wore on I had two training partners join me: Flint Wipke (playing at high-A Rancho) and Devin Thomas (a Tigers farmhand). It turned into a little training camp of sorts. Kyle and I agreed that we should try to do something formal in the coming years, so we can share the routine and up the intensity even more. So lookout for Camp O'Day, or baseball bootcamp, or maybe I'll let him pick the name. This entry is getting long, so maybe in the next one I will talk about Big League camp itself. Hope you guys enjoy it, and thank you for reading.- Darren O'Day

Shoutout to Megan

So...this one is for Megan (and maybe Colin too!) for a few reasons...

1.There are 5 "older" girl cousins (yes, Katy you are one of those) and we usually get together for a picture at family functions. This time...we were missing 3 girls. It was Meghan and I holdin' down the fort!

2. You happened to let me know that the blog is a little "Landoncentric," which I have to admit, it is. So I'm making sure she's included in the non-Landon postings!

3. Now she can leave a comment!

I really look like my mom in this picture! Yikes!

Freakin' Out

Well...not really. This video is from our trip to Hawaii (I'm just now catching up with the videos on the camera...I still need to get the ones from the video camera). While in Hawaii, Landon started making this "stress" face and we thought it was so cute. Here is in the stroller showing off his new talent!

Red Coupe Car

Our next door neighbor has a Little Tike Red Coupe Car and Landon absolutly loves it. He follows Emmalyn around while she's driving and tries to climb in it. She is out of town for the week so Landon had total access to the car. He's still a bit small for the car but had a great time climbing in, out, and all over the car! Thanks Emmalyn...we hope you don't mind!

How Cool is This!!

This morning I have been searching the internet and happened upon an add for The Human Race 10k. Seeing as though I have been a runner (more of a jogger now), I was intrigued. I think it would be amazing to participate in this event, to be a part of history. On August 31, 2008, there will be a world wide race going on in 25 cities! 4 of the cities are in the US (Austin, Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York City). If you can't make it to one of the cities and you have the Nike equipment, you can race from your home city or wherever you are on that day. Now I know there isn't much time to train, 40 days in fact, but its 6.2 miles and for most who run, this probably wouldn't be too out of reach. Now, since I don't have the equipment and I think it would be more fun to participate in one of the cities, I need to convince my husband of another trip...to New York City! Even if I am not able to participate, I hope I have piqued your interest in participating!

It Counts!

Well...I've been doing a lot of thinking about this one and I have decided to give Pennsylvania to Landon. I know it's terrible...I'm giving this way too much thought! But, I don't want to give Landon a state when I really shouldn't and I wouldn't feel right not giving him Pennsylvania. I know, I know, we didn't really visit anything in Pennsylvania but I have good reasons to add this state to his map. Here they are:

1. We arrived in Pennsylvania during daylight hours on Sunday and went from hotel to hotel looking for the best deal. We booked ourselves a room here. I know it's not the greatest but for a cheap night stay, it served it's purpose. We were able to check in and hang out for awhile.

2. While hanging out we walked around the area to find a place to eat. We happened upon this restaurant. Neither Andrew nor I have eaten at a Boston's, so we decided to try it. Nothing special, but again, it served it's purpose.

3. On Monday, we took our time getting up, we were in no rush. We hung out in bed for awhile, ate breakfast and slowly got ready to leave. When leaving for home, we pulled over on the side of the road to get a picture of this! As many of you know, McKean is my maiden name, so stopping for this picture was a must.

Since this wasn't a quick late night, early wake up and leave kind of stop, Landon gets another state for his map. Slowly, but surely he's making his way around the U.S.

Does Pennsylvania Count?

Yesterday, we left Canada for home. Since its been a long week and an even busier weekend, (plus, Andrew doesn't have to be at work until Tuesday), we decided to break the trip up. Last night we made it to Erie, Pennsylvania, which is about halfway.
Andrew and I have been debating whether or not Pennsylvania counts as a state that Landon has visited. We both agree that traveling through the state does not count as a visited state, but we have differing views on what makes it count. Andrew thinks staying the night counts as being visited. I, on the other hand, think we have to visit or see someone/something in order to make it count, not necessarily stay the night in the state. As I post this, I am also searching to find some sight to see in Erie, which would make it definite, but there isn't much to see!
What do you all think? Does Pennsylvania count?

a BIG thank you!

Landon and Nanny Moe

Andrew and I owe a huge thank you to my cousin Maureen (Nanny Moe). This trip would not have been as easy for us to get through if it wasn't for her. She came early with my mom and dad to Niagara and Canada. She was amazing! Maureen took care of Landon whenever we needed her help. She fed him (even picked and prepared his food), played with him, changed him (diapers and clothes), put him down for naps and bed, etc. By the end of the week she new what he wanted on her own. Landon absolutely loves her! We never had to worry about where he was and we were able to fully enjoy this time with family and friends.
THANK YOU NANNY MOE!
we love you!

Wedding Day!

Saturday was the big day and we were all praying for great weather. It turned out to be a beautiful day for the wedding. The ceremony was beautiful and I was so happy to be a part of it. The reception, like most, was a great party with family and friends. Congratulations Brian and Debbie! We're so happy for you two!

Rehearsal Dinner

Well Friday was a little worrisome. The weather had been pretty nice all week and it decided to pour the day of the rehearsal dinner. Luckily it cleared up before everyone showed up for dinner. The rehearsal dinner was at the Edney (Debbie's family) cottage. It was a North Carolina bar-b-que and a great time!

Great food!
Great fun!
Good times!
Miller had fun too!

Oh! Canada

We've made it to Huntsville, Ontario! We haven't been doing too much, just relaxing before all the family come in and the craziness begins.

It's a tradition for Debbie's (Brian's fiance) family to stop at Webers for hamburgers on their way home. It's just on the side of the road and you eat at picnic tables or inside old train cars. We decided to stop too.
Along the side of the roads, you may encounter a rock formation such as this. It's an inuk and it's Indian meaning good travels.
No beer or liquor in the grocery stores. You have to go to a liquor store, carrying wine, liquor, and beer. Or,you can go to the...
When you walk in, there are no fridges holding the beers. One bottle of each beer is displayed on the wall. You put the order and then it come out to you on a belt.

More Niagara

Well...I wanted to post pictures of Niagara at Night. Every night the falls are lit up with different colors of light and fireworks are set off on Friday and Sunday night. Unfortunately, my battery was dying so it didn't save the pictures I took:( It was really pretty and the fireworks were awesome. I decided to post more Niagara pictures that I took on Monday before we left.

We all decided to do one more attraction, Journey behind the Falls before we headed out to Huntsville. You are able to go directly under the Falls in a few places and then there is a place yu can view Horseshoe falls looking up.

You would never believe that a 7 year old survived this fall...but he did
Too much mist!

Niagara Falls (Canada side)

Around 2pm we met my family at the hotel in Canada, then headed out to view the falls from the other side. I have to say that the view is much better from Canada. It's more crowded and touristy but the view was great! American Falls

Horseshoe Falls

My cousin Maureen came along for the trip. We all rode the Maid of the Mist, which is a boat ride that take you right up to the falls. It was really cool to get so close. All but Dad and Danny managed to stay pretty dry.

Niagara Falls (US side)

This morning, Andrew, Landon, and I headed to Niagara Falls on the US side while my family was driving to Canada from Ohio. It started out as a gloomy, rainy day, but it stopped raining for us to walk around. The falls were beautiful!
We decided to take the cave of the mist tour and venture down (175 ft) into the gorge. It was a great view from the bottom. Before we could head down, everyone is given a poncho. It's pretty windy and you can get soaking wet. Everyone is also given very stylish sandals to wear. Andrew was not too excited about wearing these!

On Our Way

We're on our way to Canada...

Since we have to go through Buffalo, NY, we decided to stop here for a night to visit with some of Andrew's family members. We went over for a bar-b-que and it was great for both Andrew and I. We were able to introduce Landon to some more family, plus I was able to meet some family members that I hadn't met and Andrew hadn't seen in awhile. We had a great time.

Landon loved playing in the yard

Everyone at the bar-b-que

Tomorrow we are going to the New York side of Niagara Falls then later we will meet my family on the Canada side of Niagara Falls to do some more sightseeing. We can't wait!
